Summary

During the last seven years we have introduced to VT Shipbuilding, dimensional control techniques that have enabled them to implement process change; by pre cutting green material prior to erection, resulting in cost and time reductions to the overall build; at the same time raising the dimensional quality.

 VT Shipbuilding 001

To date we have offered this expertise to VT Shipbuilding, beginning with the FOPV’s, Mirabella V super yacht project, Type 45 project and continuing with their projects for Oman and Trinidad and Tobago. Our primary function is to determine green (excess material) between unit join up’s and to train VT personnel in the necessary skills to add to the dimensional quality by the use of 3D survey techniques.

VT Shipbuilding 002

To determine green; we survey the interface between two units which could be in different parts of the fabrication hall or even in different shipyards, the principal is the same. Once surveyed and the cardinal points are surveyed we can best fit the actual cardinal points to the design cardinal points using a least squares 3D transformation. By putting these points in CAD it can then be seen where the material of one over laps the other. This over lap is the green to be cut off. With this process being applied to subsequent units, the ship takes shape.

VT Shipbuilding 003

With our continuing involvement in shipbuilding we thought it useful to become members of the Shipbuilders and Ship repairers Association (SSA).

 BVT 004

We have also given talks to both the SSA and The Survey Association on our approach to Dimensional Control for the Shipbuilding industry.
